Kallanish South East Asia Steel Report - November 2024 (Nov. 7, 2024)

Flats: Vietnam's commercial-grade hot-rolled coil (HRC) market faced volatility in October as a trade investigation by Vietnamese authorities into imported HRC reshaped buyer behaviour.

Longs: The Southeast Asian rebar import market saw its largest monthly gain of the year in October, driven by price highs early in the month. Rebar offers in Singapore and Hong Kong surged initially, as Chinese suppliers were absent during China’s Golden Week holiday. However, the post-holiday slide in Chinese steel futures led to price decreases, though these remained above buyers' target levels, limiting deal activity for the month.

Semis: The ASEAN billet market saw a drop in trading activity in October, yet participants remained optimistic about potential price increases.

BF Raw Materials: The seaborne iron ore market was full of confidence in October due to China's policy stimulus, but fundamental weakness in the steel market offset this.

EAF Raw Materials: In Vietnam, offers for Japanese H2 grade scrap have risen to $330-340/t cfr in early-October, up from $325-330/t cfr during the week through 27 September.
