Samarco to face $44 billion lawsuit
Brazil’s Federal Public Ministry (MPF) has filed a BRL 155 billion ($43.7 billion) civil lawsuit against Vale and BHP joint-venture, Samarco Mineração SA, Kallanish learns from MPF documents. The lawsuit follows last November’s dam disaster which killed 19 people and polluted the Rio Doce river system (see Kallanish 10 November). The proceedings will also involve the Espirito Santo state, the Minas Gerais state, and the federal government.…
