US raw steel production increases
US raw steel production is up both week on week and year on year, Kallanish learns from the American Iron and Steel Institute.
Raw steel production in the week ended 17 December was 1.694 million short tons at 71.4% capability utilisation, up 1.2% from the previous week, when capability utilisation was 70.6%, and up 14.1% from the equivalent week last year, when capability utilisation was 62.1%.
The Great Lakes region led production with 664,000 st, followed by the South with 581,000 st and the Northeast with 209,000 st. The Midwest produced 167,000 st, while the West produced 73,000 st.
Year-to-date production stands at 84.744m st at 70.8% capability utilisation, down -0.8% from last year, when capability utilisation was 70.1%.
