US manufacturing activity perks up in January
US manufacturing activity increased in January, according to the Institute for Supply Management’s purchasing managers index.
January’s index reading was 50.9%, up 3.1% percentage points from December. Readings above 50% generally indicate growth, Kallanish notes.
The new orders portion of the index gave a reading of 52%, up 4.4 percentage points on-month, and the production portion gave a reading of 54.3%, up 9.5 percentage points.
