UK Business secretary, Sajid Javid, is expected to call for an emergency EU summit on steel industry to discuss the state of the steel industry and unfair trade practices, Kallanish learns from the UK government. The secretary discussed the topic with his EU counterparts during his visit in Brussels on October 28.

According to the EU calendar, Javid will meet EU Trade Commissioner, Cecilia Malmstrom, commissioner for financial stability, financial services and capital markets union, Jonathan Hill, and internal market commissioner Elzbieta Bienkowska.

“I want to see steel top of the EU agenda. We cannot stand by while the steel industry across Europe, not just in the UK, faces such unprecedented challenges” said Javid in the official statement seen by Kallanish. “There are no straightforward solutions to the complex global challenges but the UK government wants to work with the EU and our European partners to do all we can to support our steel industry” Javid said.

According to the document released by the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills, “Sajid Javid has also had positive talks with the Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager on speeding up work to approve the UK’s Energy Intensive Industries compensation scheme.”
