Transition needs smelters, 100% hydrogen DRI unrealistic: Sterrer
Smelters will become essential to upgrade lower-quality iron ore feedstock for ironmaking, while direct reduced iron will require a portion of carbon to ensure electric arc furnace operation, according to Primetals head of direct reduced iron Wolfgang Sterrer.
The scrap-EAF route is forecast to account for 34% of global steel production in 2050 versus 20% in 2020, with DRI-EAF seen at 15% versus 5%, DRI-smelter at 12% versus 4%, and BF-BOF at 33% versus 71%.
