Japans steelmakers hurt by degrading coke plants
Japan’s Nippon Steel and Sumitomo Metal Corp (NSSMC) and JFE Steel are both having to invest in the repair and upgrade of their coke plants ahead of schedule, according to Japanese media reports. The moves come after Japan’s reputation for reliable engineering and highly-efficient steelmaking may have been tarnished this year by a series of incidents at ageing coke plants, Kallanish notes.
