Steel jumps on inventories and merger
Chinese steel futures prices leapt higher on Monday as market inventories appear to have fallen further. Continuing speculation over the restructuring of Baosteel and Wuhan Iron and Steel (Wugang) was also a significant boost to sentiment, Kallanish notes.
The October rebar contract on the Shanghai Futures Exchange closed up CNY 128/tonne at CNY 2,268/t ($343/t), while the same contract for hot rolled coil closed up CNY 138/t at CNY 2,448/t.
