Some Ukrainian plants continue work despite Russian invasion
Although Ukraine’s leading steel plants have suspended production following Russia’s invasion of the country, others continue to work despite the fighting, Kallanish notes.
Metinvest’s Kametstal, formerly DMK, has been operating normally. The group’s Pokrovske Coal unit has been operating with a slightly reduced workload. Nevertheless, on 28 February, the facility exceeded production of 1 million tonnes of coal since the beginning of 2022, the enterprise claims.
Metinvest's mining enterprises in Kryvyi Rih continue operating and shipping product. In particular, Northern GOK is producing and shipping pellet and Ingulets GOK is making iron ore concentrate. Central GOK is producing and shipping concentrate and pellet. Capacity utilisation at the plants has nevertheless been reduced slightly.
Avdiivka Coke has put some of its production capacity into conservation mode. Due to the hostilities, the plant has suspended operations at coke shops No.2, No.3 and No.4, as well as the second chemical wing.
Metinvest previously suspended production at Ilyich and Azovstal, as well as at Zaporizhkoks and Zaporizhstal (see Kallanish passim). The company also declared force majeure.
The firm has supplied over 1,200 anti-tank hedgehogs to the territorial defence forces of Ukraine.
ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih (AMKR) also previously declared force majeure due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Last week, AMKR suspended all steelmaking operations amid the intensifying war. The process to idle all blast furnaces began last Thursday and will last between seven and ten days. The company is allocating $2 million to meet the humanitarian needs of Ukraine during the war with Russia.
Ferrexpo says it continues production and shipments to customers.
Centravis extended the shutdown of production until 9 March, after it stopped work on 28 February.
