Chinas obsolete capacity policy to take a back seat
The announcement that China’s Hubei province eliminated 4.72 million tonnes/year of excess steelmaking capacity in 2014 marks last year as a peak. The trend is a mirror of that seen in the steelmaking powerhouse of Hebei province. The official policy is likely to take second place however to bankruptcy, consolidation and environmental regulation in reducing Chinese capacity in the coming years, Kallanish notes.
