Global first-half scrap use rises, EU main exporter

China was the world’s largest scrap user in the first half of 2017, increasing consumption by 46% on-year to 62.2 million tonnes, according to the Bureau of International Recycling (BIR). Steel scrap usage for crude steel production in H1 also increased in the EU28 by 4.8% on-year to 47.7mt. In the US it grew by 1.3% to 23.8mt, in Japan by 9% to 17.85mt and in Turkey by 16% to 14.58mt. H1 brought a 1.6% increase in Turkey’s overseas purchases…
