German scrap intake falls in 2019
Scrap intake by German mills fell in 2019, in line with lower steel production, but at a slower rate, Kallanish hears from steel recyclers' federation BDSV.
Mills’ intake, including of imported scrap, went down by -6.2% on-year to 13.7 million tonnes, while intake by foundries fell -9.2% to 3.2mt. Foundries often serve the automotive and mechanical engineering industries, which explains the steeper drop by that customer group.
