German scrap consumption falls in 2023

German mills’ scrap purchases from domestic merchants last year amounted to 11.7 million tonnes, down 8.6% on 2022, according to the country’s main steel recycling associations, BVSE and BDSV. Last year saw a drop in German crude steel production, by 3.8%, especially due to lower activity at scrap-based EAF mills – down 10.8% - which throttled production due to peaking power costs.
