Chinese scrap use to grow further: BIR

Chinese scrap consumption rose 64.2% on-year in 2017 to 147.9 million tonnes, and is set to grow further with China’s electric arc furnace capacity seen reaching 120m t/year in 2-3 years’ time, according to the Bureau of International Recycling (BIR). The growth last year was due to the Chinese government instructing BOF mills to increase their scrap consumption from 11% to 20%.
