Baogang adds more scrap to produce automotive steel

Inner Mongolia Baotou Steel Union (Baogang) is trialling increased scrap usage ratio in traditional blast furnace-basic oxygen furnace steelmaking to produce automotive steel. This could meet growing demand from carmakers for lower-emission steel, Kallanish notes. Baogang lifted the usage ratio of scrap in its steelmaking process to 42% by adding scrap to the pig iron in the converter before mixing during the refining process.
