Usiminas outlines probable cause of Ipatinga explosion
An increase in unwanted airflow in a gasometer probably caused the explosion at Usiminas` Ipatinga plant on 10 August that left 34 people injured, according to the steelmaker.
“The explosion of the gasometer was due to a failure of the automatic control of the valves of the gas recovery system of Converter 4 of the steelmaking plant 2, which allowed the inflow of a high volume of air," Usiminas says.
