Indonesia claims $20bn Chinese steelworks investment
China could invest $20 billion into an industrial complex and steelworks on Indonesia’s Kalimantan island, according to Indonesian planning minister Andrinof Chaniago.
China’s Wuhan Iron and Steel (Wugang) has previously looked at building a steelworks on the island, but China’s poor record of following through on announced investments in the country mean there is no guarantee the project will proceed, Kallanish notes.
