US backs BESS investment to decarbonise copper, gold mines
The US Department of Energy announced $475 million in funding to support clean energy solutions on existing and former mine land, Kallanish reports.
The funding will go to five projects in Arizona, Kentucky, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Western Virginia. Two of the projects will feature battery energy storage systems (BESS) that will replace thermal backup power generators.
