TotalEnergies inks 15-year green H2 purchase deal with Air Products
French oil major TotalEnergies has selected Air Products as its long-term green hydrogen supplier in Europe, Kallanish learns from the companies on Friday.
The 15-year agreement covers the supply of 70,000 tonnes/year of green hydrogen starting in 2030. Air Products will deliver at TotalEnergies’ Northern European refineries’ “doorstep” from its global supply network.
The fuel is expected to avoid around 700,000 tonnes/year of CO2 emissions, helping TotalEnergies to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions from its oil and gas operations. As part of its goal to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 40% by 2030 (compared to 2015 levels), TotalEnergies is tendering 500,000 t/y of green hydrogen in Europe. The call for tenders was launched in September 2023.
Further details on the contract, such as the price of hydrogen and delivery and production locations, were not revealed.
Patrick Pouyanné, ceo of TotalEnergies, says the deal is a “stepping stone” to decarbonise the company’s Northern Europe refineries by decade-end. “Once again, we demonstrate our capacity to pioneer the energy transition and contribute to the emergence of a green hydrogen industry by offering long-term contracts with our six refineries and two biorefineries in Europe,” he adds.
“We always believed that if we made clean hydrogen available at commercial scale, the demand would be there,” comments Air Products’ ceo Seifi Ghasemi. “This contract validates our long-term strategy. Clearly the demand is here, and it will grow significantly as we move forward, playing an essential role in decarbonising heavy industry and other sectors.”
The companies aim to extend their collaboration to renewable power supply. They inked an MOU for TotalEnergies to supply 150 megawatts of solar power in Texas to Air Products. They will also discuss similar opportunities in the UK, Poland and France.
