Posco completes South Korean silicon anode plant construction
Posco Silicon Solution has completed the plant construction of a silicon anode material plant at the Yeongil Bay Industrial Complex in Pohang, South Korea, Kallanish learns from Posco.
The project will have the capacity to produce for 550 tonnes/year of anode material, which is estimated to cover demand of 275,000 EVs annually.
The company plans to add the upstream process to the project, completing the full production line in September. The target is to produce 25,000 t/y of silicon anode materials in total by 2030.
Posco Group had previously acquired a silicon anode material technology start-up named Terratechnos and changed its name to Posco Silicon Solution.
In addition, at the end of April, Posco Future M started the demo plant’s operations for a 50 t/y silicon-carbon composite anode material project at the Yeongil Bay Industrial Complex.
The South Korean steel giant said last month that once mass production technologies are established, the company expects to have an annual production capacity of 1,000 t by 2026 and 10,000 t by 2030.
Silicon anode is a next-generation anode route. It is expected to increase the battery energy density by four times compared to the traditional graphite anode route.
SNE Research forecasts the global silicon anode material market size to increase from the current level of approximately 10,000 t/y to approximately 285,000 t/y in 2035.
