Pelosi's visit may disturb EV supply chain
The electric vehicle supply chain may be disturbed by US-China tensions stimulated by US Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi's recent visit to Taiwan, Kallanish learns.
Chinese battery giant CATL may delay updates of its battery project in North America. It is said that CATL will push back related announcements till September or October. So far, information is mixed, and Kallanish awaits replies from CATL, Tesla and Ford. According to previous plans, the new battery factories are most likely to be built near the border of the US and Mexico will be mainly used to supply batteries for automakers Tesla and Ford.
CATL is headquartered in Fujian Province, which is right across the Taiwan Strait from Taiwan. The Chinese central government has already started intense military drills surrounding that region.
There is also news reporting Pelosi visited TSMC, a Taiwan-based semiconductor giant, during this trip, but neither party has confirmed.
Trade wars have been intensified as well. The Chinese central government has recently stopped exporting natural sand - a commonly used construction material which Taiwan lacks - to Taiwan. It is said that certain types of natural sand with higher silicon content are frequently used for semiconductor production.
Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden has been actively promoting restrictions on chip production in China. He recently signed the Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors for America (CHIPS) Act, making the decision to allocate $52 billion for US domestic semiconductor production.
Industry experts think Taiwanese semiconductor enterprises, especially TSMC and MediaTek, are world-leading in production techniques.
