NICKEL: Vale reports first ore production from Voisey Bay expansion
Brazil-based Vale SA is announcing first nickel ore production at its Voisey Bay mine expansion project in northern Labrador, Kallanish reports.
The operation is shifting from an open-pit mine to two underground mines: Reid Brook and Eastern Deeps. The underground mines that will develop two separate deposits will produce 40,000 tonnes/year of nickel in concentrate at a peak annual production rate of 2.6 million t/y.
