A total of 8,395 new rechargeable vehicles were registered in Italy in February 2021, a 123.9% rise compared to February 2020.

This includes new electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrids, Kallanish learns from auto association Anfia. Last month, the country issued registrations for 3,441 EVs and 4,954 plug-in hybrids, a 36.2% and 305.1% year-on-year respective rise. EVs hold a market share of 2.4%, while plug-in hybrids hold 3.5%. The market share of EVs and plug-in hybrid combined was 5.9% versus 2.3% of February 2020.

Also, in February 41,379 petrol-electric hybrid and diesel-electric hybrids were registered in Italy, a 145.8% y-o-y hike. The market share for these types of vehicles was 28.9% versus 10.3% in February 2020.

In January and February combined, 14,647 new zero-emission vehicles were sold in Italy - a staggering 108% increase compared to the same period in 2020. About 5,944 EVs and 8,703 plug-in hybrids were sold over the first two months of this year, reflecting a 33% and 239% increase, respectively, compared to January-February 2020, Anfia reveals.

It did not report any hydrogen powered vehicles registrations in 2021. In 2020, two hydrogen vehicles were sold in Italy and 17 in 2019.

A total of 143,043 new cars were registered in Italy last month, a 12.3% y-o-y fall. The country issued registrations for 277,215 new units in January-February 2021, a 13.1% fall compared to the same period last year.
