HYBRIT produces first hydrogen-reduced sponge iron
HYBRIT, the initiative to produce fossil-free steel by SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall, has produced the world’s first hydrogen-reduced sponge iron at its pilot plant in Luleå, Sweden.
“The production demonstrates that it is possible to use fossil-free hydrogen gas to reduce iron ore instead of using coal and coke to remove the oxygen,” LKAB says in a note sent to Kallanish. Around 100 tonnes of sponge iron have now been produced through hydrogen…
