Several enterprises in the electric vehicle industrial chain expressed the headwinds towards maintaining production and supply through May.

On 14 April, He Xiaopeng, founder of XPeng, said on social media: "If Shanghai and surrounding supply chain companies cannot find a way to dynamically resume work and production, all original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in China may stop production in May."

Guangdong is the major base city of XPeng's production facilities, and the other two are still in construction. According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, Guangdong, a place with increasing Covid-19 cases, produced about 12.76% of the total number cars being produced during 2021, with 15% of the amount produced consisting of new energy cars, Kallanish notes.

On 15 April, Richard Yu, ceo of intelligent automotive solution group at Huawei, said: "If Shanghai continues to be unable to resume work and production, after May, all technology and industrial industries involving Shanghai's supply chain will be completely shut down, especially the automotive industry. The economic loss will be huge. Since mid-April, some companies have already stopped production due to broken supply chains."

Shanghai and Jilin Province contributed 10.68% and 9.14% of the national automobile production volume in 2021, respectively.

Jilin is the base for FAW. It is recently reported that in Jilin, the "clearance" has been reached and FAW has resumed production. Yet, the delayed reaction and chain-effect from component companies may still exist.

China Passenger Car Association says: "Due to the long automobile industrial chain, high coordination requirements, and a wider range of shutdowns in major production and logistics bases, the production and sales pressure of the automobile market in April may be very high."
