Deep-sea mining: the contested search for critical minerals
Amid booming demand for critical minerals, the mining industry is exploring a new frontier: the ocean floor.
Mining the seabed is currently illegal. The International Seabed Authority (ISA) has granted 31 contracts for exploration across 1.5 million square kilometres. After failing to reach an agreement a year ago, the ISA has until 2025 to finalise whether exploitation will be allowed, and how, with a negotiating session scheduled for later this month.
