Asia Steel Markets 2024
Overview
Steel markets globally have faced demand destruction, geopolitical conflict, shifting environmental regulations, high-interest rates, currency fluctuations, and an increasingly troubled Chinese real estate sector. Some of these changes are structural, such as the end of Chinese demand growth, and the emergence of India as the key growth driver. Others are simply stubborn, such as high energy costs and interest rates. Some problems, such as geopolitical and trade issues, are fundamentally unstable and likely to cause volatility. Amidst all this, the industry is facing growing expectations to decarbonise in line with global carbon emissions reduction goals.
In 2024, the landscape for the next development phase of the global steel industry will be more clearly revealed. Asia is at the heart of the industry’s future and is under the greatest pressure as capacity is restructured and relocated. The region, especially Southeast Asia, is highly dependent on trade for raw materials and outlets for its steel products. As such, new measures such as CBAM in Europe, a potential tie-up between Europe and the USA, and geopolitical shifts in trade as wars continue to shape the world into blocks, will impact local producers,
But the world is full of opportunities as well as problems. The green transition will require immense investment across the entire industry. High-end steelmakers and miners of high-grade ores will see their premiums steadily increase. As trade barriers rise, nimble players will find open markets. We look forward to discussing the industry's opportunities and risks at our conference.

Keynote Session 1: Asia in the global steel market
Asia continues to drive global steel markets. Even as China stalls, global prices still waver in line with its economic sentiment and stimulus policies. Meanwhile, global steel demand growth is dominated by India's rise as a future behemoth in the industry. Alongside Southeast Asia and the Middle East, India also drives global steelmaking investment. The world's biggest steel exporters are in Asia, and most global steel trade passes through the region.
Key Questions:
- • How can the regional industry prepare for emerging supply and demand dynamics?
- • How will decarbonisation efforts impact local steelmakers?
- • Will China’s slowdown drag down the whole region?
- • Will the whole region benefit from Indian growth?
- • Will geopolitics, climate change and other challenges derail opportunities in the sector?

Session 2: Investment and demand growth
India is rapidly dominating the headlines for demand growth as it emerges from being a large steelmaker to something approaching the scale of China. It is far from the only growth country in Asia however. Southeast Asia also starts from very low per capita consumption and will naturally see demand grow. This demand is still the main driver for investment in capacity. This is bringing its problems, however. Aggressive investments are forcing importers to become exporters, and in some countries, existing steelmakers are being squeezed out by more competitive overseas investments. New investments are meanwhile vulnerable to climate change-related policy changes, with heavy overinvestment in carbon-intensive technologies and limited focus on greener growth.
Key Questions:
- • Will external demand growth compensate for the coming downturn in China?
- • Will India’s surging capacity make it a dominant exporter?
- • How will Southeast Asia steelmaking investments weather blocked trade flows?
- • What kind of investment is climate-proof?

Session 3: Trade in a turbulent world
Trade is increasingly becoming negotiated at an international level. In Europe, trade is being controlled with the environment as a justification. Asian steelmakers will have to contend with CBAM to enter that market. Meanwhile, Europe and the USA are attempting to negotiate a steel trade agreement, which could leave other regions at a disadvantage. Wars and quieter conflicts are meanwhile continuing to drive displaced steel exports from countries such as Russia and Iran. Asian nations and steelmakers are navigating an increasingly complicated world, especially as they increasingly need exports to survive.
Key Questions:
- • Which suppliers will gain the most from shifting trade flows?
- • Are politics and trade barriers now the drivers of trade rather than fundamentals?
- • Should environmental and trade issues be combined?
- • Will trade alliances leave Asian steelmakers isolated?
- • How can steel mills and traders remain competitive in an unpredictable market?

Session 4: Steel input cost
Steelmaking raw materials have been thrown around in recent years by supply disruptions and trade issues. Raw material costs remain elevated despite settling from last year’s levels. Coking coal has refused to back down as supply issues impact a limited low-vol market. Iron ore has been supported by limited Chinese supply even as seaborne supply has recovered. Going forward, these prices are expected to decline, but many surprises surely remain in store. Future raw materials meanwhile are also shifting. Iron ore miners are increasingly focused on DR-grade pellets, scrap exporters are looking to control their exports, and coking coal producers are struggling to get investment. And going forward there will be new raw materials too. Attention is increasingly turning to materials such as hydrogen to sustain greener forms of steelmaking.
Key Questions:
- • Could key steelmaking raw materials costs remain high?
- • Are coking coal supply constraints here to stay?
- • Will there be enough hydrogen to decarbonise steelmaking?
- • How will the raw materials mix for steelmaking change in the coming years?
- • Will EAFs be able to afford scrap if decarbonising economies hoover it up?
